A Port for the Future

The Sawmill Cove Industrial Park is the premiere industrial development property in Sitka. Surface transportation access to the site boundary via Sawmill Creek Road is good. Reconstruction of the road by the Alaska State Department of Transportation has been planned to accommodate increased traffic to and from the industrial site. Water transportation access potential is excellent. The site offers adequate water depth, adequate room for approach and departure maneuvers for ocean-going vessels. The City and Borough of Sitka has developed concept plans for a large vessel dock facility. A port security plan that will allow foreign-flagged vessels to berth at Sawmill Cove will be in place by summer 2008.

With the opening of Prince Rupert Port in British Columbia, Canada, Sitka presents new opportunities as a regional freight sub-port to feed into the Prince Rupert facility. The Canadian port has become one of four major shipping gateways on the west coast and the shortest link between North America and Asian markets. Using Sawmill Cove as your base of operations, you can take advantage of this opportunity to ship water, fish, and other products to China at lower freight costs.
